Configuration

The CIVIEMME-SYSTEM post press equipment behind a KBA C618 web press consists of two ST 420 vertical log stackers as well as a PL 86 DUAL log palletizer.

Via floor conveying systems the shingled streams of two folder deliveries are merged and directed into a central waste ejection system. After ejecting start-up, blanket wash and splice waste, good copies are transported via overhead conveying into one of the two installed ST 420 log stackers. The vertical log stackers convert the shingled streams into compressed and strapped logs which are directed via a shared log conveyor to the PL 86 DUAL log palletizer. Products from a different web press can be processed in the second log stacker simultaneously through the use of another overhead conveyor. The second log stacker can be used as a back-up as well. For short run production with on-the-fly plate change, printed products are processed in both log stackers. After each plate change, products are directed into each log stacker alternatively to ensure that with every start of production a new log is built. The finished logs are picked up by the gripper clamp of the PL 86 DUAL and are placed correctly sorted onto two palletizing positions. A pallet dispenser and pallet conveying technology ensure the fully automated feeding and ejection of loaded or empty pallets.

Logs built in the ST 420 are well-suited for further processing in a saddle stitcher or perfect binder. Thanks to state-of-the-art technology and by taking advantage of gravity, signatures are processed gently into strapped logs. The virtually pressure-less processing of signatures is ensured by the floating stacking head with its adjustable belts and by the automatic variable build rate of the log itself. The openly designed log building area ensures the visual monitoring of all processes and guarantees easy and fast access for the operator. Thanks to the space-saving and flexible construction, the two ST 420 log stackers could be installed beside each other and are located near the control panels of the web press. So, the press as well as the log stackers can be monitored and controlled with minimum staffing.

Logs are picked up by the PL 86 DUAL log palletizer and can be rotated 90° or 180° to optimally adjust the spine of the products for subsequent processing in bindery. An automatic turntable for 90° rotation of the pallet on the palletizing position allows for flexible packing patterns and to fully utilize the available space on the pallet with respect to the selected log length on a particular job.
